If Trump cannot buy Greenland, then he will take it by force

The desire of US President Donald Trump to buy Greenland, which the top American media (Wall Street Journal and The New York Times) seriously writes about, can be perceived differently.

There are jokes in social networks that he needs Greenland to build a large golf course, and one famous Danish politician said that the message about the desire to buy an island (and this is not only a territory but also about 56 thousand Danish citizens) is serious evidence that the American leader is crazy. You can recall the successful experience of buying Alaska the territory that brought the United States tremendous oil revenues, and notices that the current inhabitant of the White House is very fond of repeating business models that have already proved their success once.

And you can listen to American experts who are in a difficult position: on the one hand, there is a temptation to pironyonize over Donald Trumps straightforward proposals, but on the other, they are obliged to point out that these plans have a rational grain: the United States must resist the expansion of China and Russia in the Arctic and control over Greenland (in any form) would be very useful for this.

If you look at things quite cynically, then official Copenhagen has every chance to regret the current refusal to sell Greenland because taking into account the high stakes in the geopolitical struggle for the Arctic, Washington may well switch to other ways of gaining control of the island. Simply put, to pick up by a force that the Danish leadership did not want to sell in a good way.

From the point of view of Washingtons strategic interests, keeping Greenland under Danish control might seem like a rather imprudent move. According to the Financial Times, Last year, the United States warned Denmark of Chinas interest in building three airports in Greenland, which ultimately prompted Copenhagen to provide financing (for construction) to keep China out. This year, Beijing published its first official Arctic document, in which it publicly outlined the transfer of its interests in Greenland from research to the economy. In May, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered a speech in Finland criticizing the aggressive actions of China and Russia in the Arctic. The time has come for America to declare itself as an Arctic power, he said.

An important point must be taken into account: Greenland, despite the potential (but not yet fully used) wealth of mineral resources, fish resources, and the most important strategic location, is a deeply donor part of the Danish kingdom. Approximately 50% of Greenlands budget is subsidies from the Danish state treasury and these subsidies, according to The New York Times, amount to 740 million dollars a year (that is, approximately 13 thousand dollars per inhabitant). At the same time, there is a serious movement for independence from Copenhagen on the island, which is constantly faced with accusations of neocolonialism and blocking foreign investment. Usually, China is indicated as a foreign patron who will provide a sweet and profitable life independent of Denmark Greenland, but after Donald Trump showed interest in buying the island, Greenland separatists may well get an additional trump card and a powerful tool for internal propaganda.

Now they can talk about the fact that Copenhagen is depriving them of a bright future as citizens of the 52nd US state, and this propaganda image is much more attractive than any Chinese alternatives. It will be quite amusing to watch how three civilizational narratives compete: the loyalist Greenland is Denmark, Denmark is Europe, the separatist Independent Greenland will be the northern outpost of China, swimming in money and the pro-American (also separatist) Greenland is second Alaska, America is with us, America will make us rich.

The above scenario may seem too cosmological, but this is not so, because even prominent Danish experts interviewed by The New York Times expect precisely separatist discussions to aggravate amid the improvement in Greenlands financial prospects after Trumps proposal.

In recent years, the Danish government has stepped up its influence on Greenland to block Chinese investment, fearing Greenlands potential dependence on China. Denmarks intervention provoked friction with Greenland leaders, who called it neocolonialism. There is a discussion in Greenland about the cost of independence and how to pay for it, said Rasmus Kierkegaard Rasmussen, an expert on issues of Greenland and the Arctic at Roskilde University in Denmark. Either they sell a lot of fish, find oil, uranium or other minerals and tax them. Or they find a new Denmark, a new sponsor to cover $740 million. This sponsor maybe the United States. He added that while American sponsorship is unlikely, even a discussion of this could help Greenland residents find out for themselves where they can find a replacement for the millions sent from Denmark every year.

The history of American successes in Ukraine clearly shows that it is not necessary to take all the inhabitants of Greenland for maintenance. The Danish expert is extremely naive, considering that a real understanding of the economic consequences of the loss of Danish subsidies (and access to the Danish and European sales markets) will at least seriously affect the fate of Greenland. It will be enough for Washington to simply support the leaders of the Greenland separatists, provide them with information support through their media and NGOs and urgently find human rights violations committed by the bloody Copenhagen regime and its puppets. Next is a matter of technology.

By the way. If the Trump administration really steals Greenland from Denmark, then this will even be true: let Danish politicians feel what Euro-Atlantic solidarity and American gratitude are for all Denmarks efforts to block Nord Stream-2.
