Following Merkel

Following Merkel

Bavarian Christian socialists will soon have to choose a new leader.

Horst Seehofer, who recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of being the leader of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU), a long-term ally of Christian Democrats Angela Merkel, including in the ruling coalition, decided to follow the example of the “older” comrade. As the Financial Times (FT) reported, citing its sources in the CSU and the German media, Mr. Seehofer decided to leave the post of chairman of the CSU. In addition, Seehofer, reports FT, is also thinking about the early resignation of the powers of the head of the German Interior Ministry, which he has been fulfilling since March of this year. Recall that in the same March of 2018, he resigned from his post as Prime Minister of Bavaria, who also served for nearly ten years.

Horst Seehofer told a group of high-ranking Christian socialists on Sunday evening that he plans to announce his resignation as party leader this week. This is reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) and the DPA news agency. SZ also stresses that the question of the leadership of the German Ministry of the Interior Seehofer left open, although he told members of the same party that he wanted to resign from this post. DPA also reported that Horst Seehofer's plans to resign from the post of German Chief Police Officer before the official termination of his term in 2021.

For more than a year, the Christian Democrats and the Christian Socialists, the parties that, for many years of alliance, are often called "sisters", have been pursuing failures. The Seehofer party was again unable, following the results of the elections in Bavaria in mid-October, to form a government on its own. Christian socialists will have to again share power and create a ruling coalition with some center-right party. If we add to this the sharp drop in the results of the CDU block in a number of other lands, as well as in the federal elections to the Bundestag in the fall of last year, it becomes obvious that the “sisters” are going through not the best of times. Opposition to the leadership is growing in both conservative parties, which, in their opinion, has clearly lagged behind in top positions. Angela Merkel decided not to wait when her party comrades “asked” her to leave, and after another bad election result (in Hesse), she announced her decision not to nominate her candidacy for the election of a new leader of Christian Democrats to be held in December.

The Chancellor seemed to follow the example of Horst Seehofer. To be fair, however, it should be said that the talk that Seehofer will leave the post of party chairman did not begin after the failure of Christian socialists in the elections this fall, but much earlier, last year.

Horst Seehofer's positions within the game cannot be called superstrong. Many party members believe that in favor of Merkel, he turned too sharply after the CDU to the left, and they demand a return to the "real" conservatism, which has always been inherent in CSU. The pressure of his comrades in the party and, of course, Seehofer's own political convictions explain his quarrels with Merkel in recent years and repeated ultimatums regarding the open door policy pursued by the chancellor. The last “showdown” was the fate of the former chief of the German counterintelligence, who allowed himself a number of statements on the domestic policy of Germany, which clearly do not correspond to the representative of the special services.

If Horst Seehofer officially announced his resignation from the post of leader of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria, his party members will have to choose a new leader. The conference, at which the election of a new chairman can take place, is to be held in January 2019.
